How Scott Clary Built a Brand from Zero to 50M+—By Obsessing Over the Basics | X-Factor Marketing Podcast

🎧 In this week’s episode of X Factor, I sat down with Scott Clary, host of the Success Story podcast with over 50 million downloads.

Scott’s now known as a top content creator, entrepreneur, and media strategist—but what most people don’t know is that he started his brand with zero followers, five views, and no traction for over a year.

“I spent a year talking to crickets.”

That quote hit me like a ton of bricks.

Because how many of us quit when no one’s watching? When the metrics are low, the inbox is empty, and the content feels like it’s going nowhere?

Scott didn’t. And that’s why his story matters.

Forget Hacks. This Is the Truth About Growth

I came into our conversation thinking Scott would talk about AI tools, content formulas, or algorithm tricks.

He didn’t.

“Most of my friends ask me how to start a podcast. I give them my exact playbook. Out of 30 people, only three actually start.”

That’s when it clicked.

The difference isn’t strategy. It’s execution.

It’s the people who are obsessed enough to start—messy, early, imperfect—and stay in the game longer than everyone else.

How He Creates for the Right Audience

One of Scott’s core principles is this:

“Create for your past self.”

Not your ideal client. Not your boss. Not the algorithm.

Talk to the version of you from three years ago—the one who didn’t know what you know now. That’s where your most authentic, resonant, high-converting content comes from.

Because it’s real. And because someone else out there is living that version of your life right now.

His Real System (That You Can Steal)

Here’s what Scott’s system looks like in practice:

  • Pick one format you actually enjoy. If you hate TikTok, don’t do TikTok. If you love deep conversation, start a podcast.

  • Reverse engineer what’s working. Study the fastest-growing creators in your niche. Learn from their best content. Add your spin.

  • Block. The. Time. If it’s not in your calendar, it won’t happen. Period.

  • Repurpose everything. One podcast can become 30+ pieces of content. Scale by slicing.

This isn’t magic. It’s momentum.

Why Obsession Wins

The most powerful moment of the interview?

“I was up until 3:30 AM studying a Facebook account that was blowing up. I had to know why.”

That’s not ego. That’s curiosity. That’s the mindset that builds great brands.

The best creators aren’t the most talented. They’re the most obsessed—with improvement, with connection, with learning what others won’t bother to study.

You Don’t Need to Be Ready. You Just Need to Start.

If you’ve been thinking about building your brand…

Starting a podcast…

Creating content for your business…

Stop thinking. Start doing.

Here’s your move this week:

  • Pick one platform you enjoy.

  • Create something for the version of you three years ago.

  • Put two hours on your calendar—and ship it.

It doesn’t have to be great. It just has to be real. And consistent.

Scott’s right. It’ll take longer than you think. But it’ll be more valuable than you ever imagined.

Let's Grow,

Wendy
